I’ve been doing more Android development lately, which has reminded me of my love of custom ROMs. It is always a good idea to test any OS in a virtual machine prior to installation. This builds familiarity with the process and lowers the likelihood of unexpected surprises over basic things.

I build LineageOS (and CyanogenMod before it) from scratch every other year or so. Here’s the basic process for building a ROM for the official Android emulator. Note that this build will not work on actual mobile hardware, but it will work in Android Studio for development.

Band Gap recently participated in Loudoun Economic Development’s Small Business Summit, an annual event hosted to support and engage local entrepreneurs. Representing Band Gap, Cathleen Titcomb joined the summit, which offered a grounded, tactical look at modern leadership and the realities of scaling a business.

Keynote speaker Kristen Hadeed challenged the traditional pursuit of perfection by advocating for the #permissiontoscrewup. Her argument was straightforward: innovation is functionally impossible without the willingness to fail. By rebranding “failure” as “learning,” organizations can move away from a culture of fear toward one of rapid pivoting and informed risk-taking.

On March 27, 2026, the artificial intelligence and autonomous systems communities gathered at the University of New Mexico’s Centennial Engineering Center for the RAISE Field Day. Focused on advancing “Responsive and Resilient AI for Autonomous Systems Engineering,” the day-long event brought together a dynamic mix of experts from academia, national laboratories, and private industry. Band Gap is proud to have been part of the conversation.

Band Gap CEO and Principal Applied Scientist, Dr. Jay Jay Billings, joined colleagues from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to discuss the critical challenges and frontier applications of building AI systems that are not only capable but fundamentally reliable and safe when deployed in autonomous environments.

Band Gap had a fantastic time attending the 2026 Loudoun Farm Exchange yesterday. The event was a wonderful opportunity to connect with local agricultural professionals and demonstrate how modern technology can support traditional farming practices.

Our team staffed a booth to showcase Tracee, Band Gap’s intelligent field tracking tool designed to turn acres into analytics. Throughout the day, we provided live demonstrations of the software in action, handed out informative literature and field guides, showcased our latest product posters, and, of course, shared plenty of chocolate with attendees!

We were excited to have our own CEO, Jay Jay Billings , present alongside our colleagues from AI Prime at the Loudoun 1 Million Cups meeting on January 28th, 2026. The collaborative presentation, titled “AI Automation for Small Business”, focused on how modern artificial intelligence tools can help local organizations streamline their operations and reclaim valuable time.

During the talk, Band Gap and AI Prime highlighted the hidden costs of manual work that drain team resources, such as repetitive data entry and document processing. The presentation also demystified exactly what artificial intelligence is for the attendees. We explored the mechanics of Large-Language Models (LLMs) and explained how emerging “AI Agents” can delegate work to dramatically improve the accuracy and utility of responses.

The Eclipse Integrated Computational Environment

We use and support development on the award-winning Eclipse Integrated Computational Environment (ICE), a scientific workflow engine and toolkit for building reusable applications. Eclipse ICE is 100% open source and released under the Eclipse Public License, version 2. It has its own product page and mailing list. Its capabilities are also well covered multiple journal articles and papers (such as Software X). Questions about support for Eclipse ICE from Band Gap can be directed to info@bandgap.ai.

Dr. Jay Jay Billings is the CEO and a Principal Applied Scientist at Band Gap, a Virginia Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to developing technology that creates a better world. Blending his extensive background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computing, he tackles complex challenges to create solutions with a lasting public impact in critical areas like agriculture and special education.

Prior to his work at Band Gap, Dr. Billings spent his days writing scientific software across government contractors, National Labs, and Big Tech. His notable past experiences include working on “AI for trucking” at Amazon and leading the U.S. Department of Energy’s first Research Software Engineering group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is an active member of the Technical Advisory Council at the Eclipse Foundation, where he also leads the development of the Eclipse Integrated Computational Environment.
